India issues arrest warrant for Gere over kiss
An Indian court has issued an arrest warrant for Richard Gere and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shelty after they kissed and embraced in public at an HIV/AIDS awareness event in New Dehli. The issue has caused an uproar in India where citizens have taken to the streets burning effigies of Gere. The judge who issued the warrants called the kiss and embrace an ”obscene act” and subpoenaed television footage of the event. Under Indian law, a person convicted of public obscenity faces up to three months in prison, a fine, or both.

Baldwin: ‘If I never acted again I couldn’t care less’

var clickExpire = “05/26/2007″;

BaldwinLOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Divorced dad Alec Baldwin, caught yelling at his daughter on a voicemail message, said Wednesday he asked NBC to let him out of his “30 Rock” contract so he can devote his time to the issue of “parental alienation.”

“If I never acted again I couldn’t care less,” Baldwin said in a pre-taped appearance for ABC’s “The View,” scheduled to air Friday.

The actor, in a transcript provided to The Associated Press by “The View,” said that he also wanted to quit “30 Rock” so the sitcom and the hundreds who work on it wouldn’t “be hurt by the situation.” (Watch what?s in, and behind, the mud Baldwin and his ex have been slinging Video)

NBC, however, quickly shot down the idea. The actor has become a key asset for the freshman sitcom, stealing the show as an oily but charming network executive overseeing a “Saturday Night Live”-type program.

“Alec Baldwin remains an important part of ‘30 Rock.’ We look forward to having him continue his role in the show,” NBC said in a statement Wednesday. (more…)

Love-Starved Dance With Themselves in Air Sex Competition

It’s like air guitar, only dirtier.

Love-starved Japanese men are gathering in Tokyo’s theater district to mime their best bedroom moves in a performance they’re calling “Air Sex,” the Mainichi Daily News reported recently.

“Air sex was originally invented by guys who couldn’t get girlfriends but desperately want to have sex,” said the creator of the genre, J-Taro Sugisaku.

The men compete in much the same manner as air guitar, crowning the champions who best mimic those actions that usually appear under cover of darkness.

And it’s dangerous, said last year’s champ, a guy named Cobra.

“You can’t care about what women watching your performance are thinking about you,” he said. “When you get down to air sex, you’ve got to immerse yourself in the air sex world.

“Air sex can’t be performed in half-measures,” he continued. “If it is, you’re only asking for trouble.”

JIM RENEE.JPGThis morning, eagle-eyed reader Emily alerted us to a hot new Hollywood romance, if by “hot” you mean “unbelievable” and by “romance” you mean “publicity stunt”: America’s Crush© John Krasinski has been having a hot on-set romance with his Leatherheads co-star Renée Zellweger! In a way, this relationship makes total sense: For Krasinski, he moves into the upper echelons of A-List dating, and for Renée, he’s a non-gay man willing to show his face in public.

Which now begs the question: Is anyone out there Team Renée? I like the girl fine (Cold Mountain and Chicago being two of my favorite movies, not to mention my 8 DVD copies of Bridge J), but JIM? My Jim? OUR JIM? That bitch.

In other news, no new Office last night. On the bright side, here is a HILARIOUS promo for next week’s show, and one of Jim’s best Dwight pranks ever.

i’m not gay. i just understand women.

via people.com

'I Understand Women'As one of American Idol’s most polarizing figures, fans either love or hate Sanjaya Malakar – but he says he’s always been popular with women.

“I’ve always gotten along with girls better because I was raised by women,” Malakar tells PEOPLE in its new issue.

Malakar, whose parents divorced when he was 3, says his ease with women comes from being close to his mom and his sister, Shyamali, who were his biggest influence growing up in Seattle. But getting along with girls didn’t always work to his benefit.

“I got teased in school because people figured I must be gay because I understand women,” the phenomenally popular American Idol castoff says. “I think that’s why guys didn’t like me – because I got along with girls so well. When I went up to girls they would give me a hug and a kiss on the cheek like I was their gay friend. But I was the straight guy that understood them.”

As for his dating past, Malakar, who is now 17, says: “I had a girlfriend but she became clingy, and I didn’t want to get into a really serious relationship because I was 16. Before his arrival on the hit FOX show, “I just wanted to date and have fun,” he says.

[Plus another good, free use of cellphones.  Cellphones: they're not just for free 411 calls anymore.]

Product Tips You Can Use, by Way of Cellphone

FROM time to time, Philips Electronics has used its “sense and simplicity” campaign to clear away marketing that bothers consumers. Last year it paid Hearst $2 million to remove the subscription cards from four of its magazines for a month, and several times it has bought up blocks of commercials on television shows and used them to give air time back to the programmers (like CBS’s “60 Minutes” and NBC’s evening news).

Now Philips is using the same campaign to showcase a free service it is offering to cellphone users. The service, Philips Simplicity Concierge, lets people send text messages to seek information about popular destinations in major cities — restaurants in Boston, for instance, or spas in London — and get a Yellow Pages-style listing of five options, including phone numbers for making reservations.

The recommendations made by the service, which will be available on the Internet and by cellphone through the end of the year, are being drawn from the content of Condé Nast Web sites. Under the arrangement, Philips is paying $5 million to the Condé Nast Media Group, a unit of Condé Nast Publications that handles marketing and sales for the company’s magazines and Web sites.

“When you’re traveling and pressed for time, and haven’t had an opportunity to look for resources, you want a trusted source to give you a recommendation,” said Eric Plaskonos, director of brand communication at Philips. (more…)

halberstam

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Halberstam died yesterday in a car accident in California.  Here’s the story from ESPN.com.  He won the award for his writing about the Vietnam War, but may have been more well-known for his sports writing.  I know I was a fan.  He even wrote for ESPN.com’s Page 2 for a while (you can find those columns here).  I most recently read his book “The Teammates” about Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio.
