Not only have half the cabs in NYC been mysteriously covered in paintings of flowers (is the cows of 2007?), but it seems the cabs are being branded now. As if the bright yellow wasn’t quite enough of a tip off that a cab is a cab is cab. (Though there is that lady in our neighborhood who drives around a cab-colored Crown Vic, which I have tried to hail at least 20 times). I am sure you have seen the new symbols around town.

I, frankly, think it is quite ugly. The fonts are a mess, the letters don’t make sense visually and the spacing is st rang e. You would think in a town full of artist, designers, contest afficianados, they would be able to find someone who could come up with a better look.
Anywhose, the NY Times did a story, or blog entry, or something online, on how the cab got its new look, which could be subtitled “Design by Bureaucracy.” It also asked 8 famous designers (who I have never heard of) to critique the design. Reviews are tepid at best. One reviewer had a suggestion of his own, which I think works better for NYC’s no-nonsense, to-the-point asthetic, and captures the frustration that is often involved when hailing a cab in the rain.
