… and you find yourself in Chicago, do yourself a favor and try to get into Alinea for dinner.  Grant Achatz’s “molecular gastronomical” restaurant does not disappoint.  That $400ish will get you a 24-course “tasting” menu, plus wine pairings.  That may sound like a lot, but no fear — some dishes are only one bite!

Grant Achatz

This week’s The New Yorker has a great profile of the man behind Alinea, Achatz, and his recent bout with tongue cancer which threatened to leave him without his sense of taste.  Quel horreur for a chef!  Anyway, luckily he is currently cancer-free.  The story, and his determination to find an alternative treatment to surgery, are fascinating!  Definitely worth the twenty-or-so minutes you’ll need to read this sucker.

What better way to curb the afternoon snack craving than… a pair of blue sunglasses??

Wha?

TreeHugger reports that a Japanese company, Yumetai, has produced sunglasses that curb one’s appetite.  Not only do they make food look gross, the color blue affects the brain’s appetite center.  Huh.  Who knew?

Where do I get me a pair??

Stuff White People Like March 10, 2008

Sandwich

I think I’m a little late to the game on this one… it was covered by DailyCandy before I left on vacay.  But, the new blog, “Stuff White People Like,” covered my dearly departed fave show, “The Wire,” this week.  Their full list includes topics such as art degrees, Sarah Silverman, kitchen gadgets, Manhattan (whoop!), expensive sandwiches and another 80-some-odd topics.

Man.

U+ Wine Glasses

Just spied these tri-pod wine glasses ($105 for 4) from Umbra’s U+ collection in the new March issue of Bon Appetit (love the re-design btw), and I just think they are so cute, and genius. Delicate, but not twee. It’s so refreshing to see a completely new spin on such a classic design. LOVE. But, sadly, I have too many wine glasses in my cabinets already. These go on the wish list.

News from the Post’s Page Six is that Paris Hilton is promoting a new line of canned Prosecco in Berlin.

While, I’m a fan of Prosecco, this seems to me, um, a little dirty.  Kinda like that Trump water.  Ew.  I’ll stick to my canned sparkling wine from Sofia Coppola.

From today’s New York Times… Your Mom will be making this at her next soiree.

Spiced Nuts & Bacon

Recipe: Spiced Nuts With Sugared Bacon

Time: 50 minutes

2 cups unsalted, roasted mixed nuts (or use all almonds or cashews)

1 1/2 tablespoons egg white, beaten slightly

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

1 teaspoon garam masala

3/4 teaspoon cumin

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon allspice

Pinch of cloves

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, to taste

3/4 pound sliced bacon

1/2 cup light brown sugar.

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large bowl, toss nuts with egg white, coating nuts evenly. Add granulated sugar, spices, salt and cayenne, and toss to combine.

2. Spread nuts on a baking sheet. Roast, stirring frequently and breaking up any clumps, until nuts are nicely browned, 12 to 15 minutes. Break up any remaining clumps while nuts are still warm; immediately transfer to a bowl.

3. Increase oven temperature to 350 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with a nonstick liner (or use parchment paper sprayed with nonstick spray). Arrange bacon in a single layer on baking sheet. Sprinkle a thin, even layer of brown sugar over bacon, coating both sides. Bake until crisp and dark golden, 20 to 25 minutes.

4. Transfer bacon slices to a wire rack set over a rimmed baking sheet (or some paper towels) to cool. Cool. Break bacon into bite-size pieces and mix with nuts.

Yield: 2 cups.

Paul Newman

Luxist reports (via AdAge) that Paul Newman’s Newman’s Own line will expand into wine in early 2008. A 2006 California Chardonnay and 2006 California Cabernet Sauvignon will bow in March. As usual, all of the profits and royalties (after taxes) from the $16 price tag will go to the Newman’s Own Foundation which donates money to thousands of charities. Rebel Wine Company will produce.

The NY Times is Cheap Too! September 19, 2007

Red Wines Under $10The NY Times had an article today on great bottles of wine under $10.  Hey, how’d they know my price point?  And after buying, not one, but two really crappy bottles of wine from Best Cellar, I clearly can use all the help I can get.  The reviewed one wine in particular that sounded quite intriguing to me:

[O]ur No. 2 wine, the 2005 Domaine de l’Ameillaud, doesn’t fit into established categories. It is labeled a Vin de Pays de Vaucluse because the grapes come from vineyards just outside the Côtes-du-Rhône zone. Nonetheless it is fresh and attractive with typical Rhone flavors buttressed by just enough tannin to keep the wine lively. For great values in French wines, it pays to look outside the more popular appellations.

Yes, I am going through a Cotes du Rhone phase.  Back off.

Anywhos, they recommended, when choosing a “cheap” bottle of wine, that you look for lesser known wine regions (like the above) and countries.  Like Portugal and . . . Uruguay?  M’okay.  Uruguayan wine cannot be worse that that Italian swill I bought, so there you go.  Once again proving that wine experts at the NY Times are smarter than I am.

Our Favorite Hangout Finally Opens! September 18, 2007

maura-and-dereks-wedding-090.jpgAfter much much much ballyhoo, our favorite neighborhood restaurant (Vespa) finally opened our favorite neighborhood bar (called, no surprise, Bar Vespa). That’s right, it was our favorite even before it opened. First, it helps that the bars on the UES are pretty crappy. As evidenced by our, um, interesting time at every 22-year-old’s favorite, Tin Lizzie — love that John Denver. Second, we do love our Eggplant Pennette and any place that serves that must serve up a mean cocktail.

So we visited and reviews are mixed. The seating area looked nice, but we got chased out of there pretty quick by the almost frantic manager. First night jitters and all. So we stood in the too small wine bar/ coffee bar. But the bartender poured me a nice Shiraz, just what I was looking for even though I was noncomittal and just asked for “something like the Cotes du Rhone I was just drinking at home.” And the other girls seemed quite happy with there Prosecco cocktails. They had raspberries in them and who doesn’t love that.

maura-and-dereks-wedding-091.jpgSo drinks were yum. Staff nice and helpful if strained. Overall a supportive thumbs up experience for a UES neighborhood hangout.

2nd Avenue Deli reopening . . . on 33rd and Lex? September 5, 2007

The NY Times had an article about restaurants that are opening soon (though sometimes by soon they mean Spring 2008).  So now I not only have a new roster of TV shows to watch, I also have a whole new swath of restaurants that I won’t be able to get reservations at.  Awesome.

Reading this article is like seeing previews before a movie.  Everything sounds delicious in theory.  Some of them sound particularly intriguing, like Merkato 55 (pictured), which will serve African food, and Ilili, an upscale Flatiron Lebanese restaurant.  Though I guess we must wait until the reviews start coming in, or until Liz goes there, to know if it’s worthy of our excitement.

At any rate, check out this strange reopening notice in the article.  I mean, I like a latka as much as the next girl, or goy (or g[o]irl, haha), so I am glad the place is reopening.  But Lex?  Really?

SECOND AVENUE DELI The younger generation of the Lebewohl family is reopening this East Village kosher deli in Murray Hill. So what if it’s still called the Second Avenue Deli? What about Sullivan Street Bakery, on West 46th Street, or, for that matter, Madison Square Garden? The Adam Tihany redesign from 1996 is being repeated here with somewhat fewer seats, more smoked fish on the menu, a full liquor bar and nuggets of grivenes (chicken cracklings) and ptcha (garlicky jellied calf’s foot) to nibble with a drink and to make mavens weep with joy: 162 East 33rd Street, (212) 677-0606 or (212) 689-9000. October.
