not that there’s anything wrong with being gay….seriously though, i had no idea!
R.E.M. have a new album coming out. The boys old men grace the cover of the new issue of Spin magazine, and frontman Michael Stipe spends some time talking about his own coming out.
On His Sexuality:
“It was super complicated for me in the ’80s. I was totally open with the band and my family and my friends and certainly the people I was sleeping with. I thought it was pretty obvious.”
Going public was a little easier when he realized it might inspire people to change their views about homosexuality:
“I didn’t always see that. But I see now, of course that’s the case, of course that’s needed. I’d just never felt strongly enough about a particular relationship to say, ‘Yeah, he’s my boyfriend, that is what it is.’ Now I recognize that to have public figures be very open about their sexuality helps some kid somewhere out there.”
On his songwriting:
“There are songs I wrote in the past that were gender-specific. ‘7 Chinese Brothers’ was about me breaking up a couple—and then dating both of them, a man and a woman, which is a terrible thing to do, but I was young and stupid….At the time I was writing about what I knew, and what I knew was myself. I found out I’m not that kind of writer. I think I’m better when I write about things that are not me.”

Saw this in the Sports Guy’s column, who credits it to Tom M. in Houston. Thanks Tom. Thought our NBA fan out there would like it…
Quick, what do at least 5 new newtwork prime time shows have in common? If you said British actors playing Americans, well, you might be right. But they also have all used a poppy little ditty called “Young Folks” by Peter Bjorn & John. So far, I have heard this for tracking shots of New York (Dirty Sexy Money and Gossip Girl) and San Francisco (Journeyman). It was on a commercial (Big Bang Theory). And, according to Bellabaise, it was on Big Shots. I am pretty sure I heard it on at least one other show, but at this point it’s all a blur. So, IAYM, bonus points for anyone who can find this song on other shows.
So, I have heard nothing but TERRIBLE stuff about the VMAs last night. The LA Times headline was “Britney Headlines VMA Snoozer” and said the revamped VMAs “failed in a most unpleasant way.” EW called the whole thing a “mess.” Jeesh.
And then there was Brit Brit. See the video here. EW.com says, “Britney gallumphed around like a zombie.” The LA Times said, “She didn’t dance. She could barely walk. She lip-synched. She had to be helped just to walk down two steps … Her gut was the only thing shaking when she tried to chest shimmy.” Yikes. MTV clearly knew things were falling apart because they kept showing the stage from waaaaaay in the back. My favorite part was where they cut away from the “dancers” to show 50 Cent looking, well, totally bored. I mean, even Britney looked like she would rather be doing something else. I’ve seen more focus in Jen’s “My Humps” car dance. And, lady, if you are going to wear panties (and let’s thank God for that), let’s make sure you are really fit. She is looking pretty garlicky.
So, if MTV wants to put on an exciting show, they should watch Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, which I did last night. Just have Questlove from The Roots sit on stage, bang on his drums, and invite a random assortment of people to come up and sing together. Now that would an exciting history-making musical event.
And one more thing. Supposedly, the best part of the VMAs was Chris Brown’s medley. Granted, Rihanna’s 45 second version of “Umbrella” was great, if too short. And Chris has some amazing dance moves (can I call them sick?). But, this was the best the VMAs had to offer? He was clearly lip-syncing (only slightly better than Brit Brit) and was quite obviously exhausted at the end of it.
Sad news today in the opera world. Luciano Pavarotti, one of the world’s great tenors, died this morning at his home in Modena, Italy. In honor of his great greatness, below is Pavarotti singing “Nessun Dorma” from Turandot. This would basically be his go-to song if he did karaoke.
Okay, it’s good. But does it make up for Panty-gate and all the other terrible things I have read about in the past 3 years? Does it make up for Chaotic? Unlikely.
Amy Winehouse has finally entered rehab. Does that mean she won’t be able to sing her big hit, kinda like how Prince won’t sing his drrrty songs? It would be a touch hypocritical. Her supportive hubby has gone in too. Ojala que it works better for them than LiLo.
