gino’s identity is revealed! but he’s dead. June 8, 2008

The Wall Street Journal (via Boston Daily) yesterday had a story about trying to track down Gino, a dancing Lothario from American Bandstand, who the Celtics flash in a clip on the JumboTron when victory seems imminent. The Celtics were even interested in doing a documentary on him. Well, they still can, but don’t expect any new quotes. Because he’s dead.

The video, taken from a 1977 episode of the show, features dancers showing off the Hustle and other retro moves and is set on any given night to popular tunes of yesteryear. The Celtics have been using the video for a few years, but it didn’t get a mass following because the losing team didn’t have many opportunities for disco celebration. This year the Celtics posted the best record in the league, and “the cult of Gino has really taken hold,” Rich Gotham, the Celtics’ team president, says.

One dancer, Terry Izen of East Highlands, Calif., received a call a few weeks ago from another former dancer telling her to check out the Gino video on YouTube.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God, it’s Joe Massoni!’” says Ms. Izen, who says she is the redhead to the right of him in the video.

The news couldn’t have been sadder. Mr. Massoni, the woman said, passed away 18 years ago from pneumonia. “I didn’t want to burst everybody’s bubble because it’s been so neat what’s been going on in Boston,” Ms. Izen said. The Wall Street Journal couldn’t independently verify the claim that Mr. Massoni is the deceased dancer. But Dick Clark Productions vouches for Ms. Izen’s story. A spokeswoman for the San Bernardino, Calif., coroner’s office confirmed that a man named Joseph R. Massoni passed away in 1990 at age 34 in Fontana, Calif. Calls to the residence of Mr. Massoni’s brother weren’t returned.

You hear that? You may win your championship, Boston. But you’ll never have your Gino back. Not that, like the team itself, you cared much about him until the Celtics started winning.

This genius Reebok marketing campaign features one of Your Mom’s favorite Celtics, Jo Jo White!

The others in the series of three include another former C, Dee Brown, and current Patriots DL Vince Wilfork. They can be found here and here. One involves dentistry and one involves pizza… you just gotta watch for yourselves. Also involved prominently is the Celtics’ leprechaun mascot — does anyone know if it has a name?

GO CELTICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEAT LA!!!!

revised countries of baseball map! May 10, 2008

Filed under: Sports — your mom @ 7:24 pm

the map that was previously posted has been revised…see below.

some of the not so major updates from the updater himself:

-The original map had a San Francisco Giants following all the way up to the state of Washington. I know that’s not correct. Those in Oregon that care about Major League Baseball don’t root for the Giants. They’re more likely to be Mariners fans. But, Giants fans are much more prevalent in the state of California and parts of Western Nevada than was shown on the original. Those were both easy and obvious changes.

-The original map also severely underestimated the Los Angeles Dodgers fan base. About the size of Tennessee? I think not. I realize that’s a highly populated region, but the Dodgers have been a staple on the West Coast for about 60 years now. They have a good amount of fans in the most southern edges of California and even western Arizona.

-I would have liked to shrink the size of that Diamondbacks region. But, I’d be making it unincorporated territory, so I decided against it. I’ll let them pretend to have that large of a following. About two thirds of that is desert anyway. The same goes for the Rockies. They’re not that popular. There should be spatterings of Cardinal red and Cubbie orange (?) in that black region. If not, it should be unincorporated. But, again, I didn’t see the point in doing that.

-The original map didn’t take into account the Cardinals’ following in Oklahoma. It’s for real, so I added it. A lot of those Oklahomans grew up on KMOX, a station that once carried Cardinals games to much of the Midwest. The Cards are really considered the “team of the Midwest.” I think the original map did a good job of showing that, but decided to give all of Oklahoma to the Rangers, which was wrong.

-The original map also surrounded Astros country with Rangers fans, which doesn’t make a lot of sense. From what I’ve read and heard in the past, the Astros‘ following spreads down through southern Texas and into Mexico. That was changed.

-The Braves have a gigantic following in the southeast United States. The original did a fine job of showing that, but I expanded it even more. The original didn’t account for Braves fans in the Florida panhandle, North Carolina, or western Virginia. All of which are legit.

-The original also had this weird narrow flow of Indians fans through West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. I think most of Kentucky is Reds’ country. I’m pretty positive that’s right.

-The last change I made was shrinking the Mets‘ fan base. Their following is pretty much concentrated around northern New Jersey and the boroughs of New York City. I’m not sure why the original expanded their territory into Pennsylvania.

Deep Thoughts with Manny Ramirez April 23, 2008

Now that this blog is basically down to one (from its original five), you, dear readers, are going to have to put up with the things that I(AYM) find interesting, namely the Red Sox, Tom Brady, Lost (and more TV) and home decor — not necessarily in that order.

Manny 2007 ALDS

Which brings me to this endearing quote from Manny Ramirez to the New York Times’ Jack Curry:

“After all this is over, all I want is for my kids to go to college and to be their best friend,” Ramírez said. “That’s all I want. I don’t care about home runs or whatever.”

Say what you will about the enigmatic slugger, but I think he really is a genius. And, apparently, a doting dad.

Happy Baseball Season! April 4, 2008

This post may be a couple days late, but my Sox (red) are off to a great start, despite the around-the-world trip to start the season in Japan. They are 3-1 after knocking around the A’s on two different continents. Beckett comes back this Sunday, and all (well, most — Schilling is still out) is right with the Nation.

I came across this great map (from a Niketown store??)…

this is an excerpt from the sports guy’s column today - ”Sports’ two most intriguing words: What if?” - the entire column is funny and intriguing, if you are an nba fan, and it really has me thinking….what if your mom wasn’t a sad, pathetic knick fan? i think the world would be a better place.

What if the Knicks had never hired Isiah Thomas?

This could have been its own bizarro “Where Amazing Happens” commercial called “Where Isiah Happens.”

(Cue up the annoying piano music that haunts me every time I try to fall asleep after hearing it for five straight months.)

(Picture of the ‘05 Suns celebrating after a playoff win.)

Where Phoenix dumps the Stephon Marbury and Penny Hardaway contracts on someone and remakes its team into a contender happens.

(Picture of the ‘07 Bulls celebrating after a playoff win.)

Where Chicago dumps Eddy Curry for two lottery picks and copious amounts of cap space happens.

(Picture of the ‘07 Raptors celebrating after a playoff win.)

Where Toronto finds some dummy to take Jalen Rose’s contract and aid its rebuilding process happens.

(Picture of San Antonio’s 2005 trophy celebration.)

Where San Antonio dumps Malik Rose’s contract for a center who helps them win the title happens.

(Picture of the ‘08 Blazers celebrating after a last-second win.)

Where the 2008 Blazers become the most likable young team in the league because they found a taker for Zach Randolph happens.

(Picture of a white SUV.)

Where a Truck Party happens.

(Picture of Anucha Browne Sanders celebrating on the courthouse steps.)

Where a humiliating $11 million sexual harassment settlement happens.

(Picture of Curry and Randolph looking overweight.)

Where an NBA frontcourt that includes two C-cups happens.

(Picture of a mostly empty Madison Square Garden.)

Where a 60-year tradition of professional basketball goes down the tubes happens.

(Picture of Isiah sitting on the bench with that frozen, blank look on his face like he’s either flatlining or planning to kill everyone on the locker room after the game.)

Where Isiah Happens.

(Follow-up note: Has a GM ever directly altered the fortunes of SIX franchises before? Portland, San Antonio, Phoenix, Toronto, Chicago and New York. That’s 20 percent of the league. See if you can top that resume, Chris Wallace!)

and if you haven’t seen any of the nba’s where amazing happens campaign, check out the latest tv spots here if you’re an eastern conference fan….and here if you’re a western conference fan…these just launched over the weekend!
